Many a kitchen is bespeckled with out dated, less than attractive elements. Items such as faded cabinets, deeply scratched sinks, broken drawers, countertops with nicks and stains, oh I could go on with this list for another couple of pages. And while the overall design might be practical, these other things take away from those assets. And while more often than not, big things such as replacing appliances from an era gone by is not an option, actions can be taken to make a big improvement to the space. So, my advice is not to say, “if we can’t change the large things it is not worth fixing up the others.” Instead think of tackling the small as taking steps down a path that eventually could lead to the exchange of the 1980’s appliances.

Here is a list of potential home improvement projects to get you underway.

Build window benches

Retile the floor

Bring in new window treatments

Paint cabinets

Attach new pulls/knobs to drawers

Remove old grout and insert new

Remove old caulk and insert new

Paint the face of your refrigerator with chalkboard paint

Paint the walls a new colour, or even just a fresh coat of the same colour

Cut inserts out of cabinets and replace with frosted glass

I am headed out to the garden this weekend with the intention of completing a self-imposed mission. While many garden owners try to hide their sheds in a corner, I plan to do the opposite. Though I can see why others might choose to quarantine off an uninteresting structure in order to keep it out of view, there are just too many great tips on how to make them beautiful for me to resist the project. By sharing those ideas here, I hope to get others motivated to do the same. All of this can be accomplished within a small budget, and some ideas won’t cost a thing, so there goes the excuse of not having the financial resources.

For those interested in making their shed look quaint without spending any money to do so, this one’s for you. Dry out some of the more fragrant and colourful flowers that you have cut from your garden. Then tie them together in a decorative fashion with raffia, or any other material you use tie things with in the garden, and hang them over the windows and door of the shed. Instantly, you have brought a delightful fragrance and a gorgeous accessory to the space.

My favourite additions are a weather vane and a trellis. You can pick up an old weather vane on the cheap at a village market or salvage yard. If you want to bring in some more colour, paint it a wonderful bright summer shade. As for the trellis, you need not purchase one, as you can build one yourself from any wood or metal left over from other garden or house projects. Then plant a hearty crawler below and train it to grow on to the trellis. Depending on the plant you choose, this could be yet another way to introduce a burst of colour.

Finally, place garden furniture off to one side of the front door of the shed. If you have an old café set, sand it down and repaint it. If you are purchasing something new, consider the benefits of a folding table and chairs, as these can be stored inside the shed during bad weather. Don’t underestimate the power of a simple table and two chairs, with them you can design a particularly lovely vignette that will beckon those who visit your garden. They will also provide you with a place to rest after a satisfying day of planting and pruning, along with a vantage point to access your garden’s progress.

We do a lot of talking about creating an outdoor room from scratch, with hedges, purgolas, giant umbrellas, even carpets for the garden. But we here spend much less time thinking about putting an actual structure with walls out in that space. Now that my daughter has really taken a shine to painting, I have been considering, just that, putting a premade structure in our garden for her.

She never had a playhouse, and while it is a bit late for one now, she could very well have a studio. In that, she could house her art supplies, a folding chair, and table which could be carried out into the sunlight on good days. I am keeping this idea under wraps at the moment, until I have an idea of whether or not I can convince my husband to give up some of his garden space for this additional structure.

Until I find just the right moment to ask that of him, I will work on the measurements, and style I think that would best suit both her and the home itself. The more I think about it, the more I wish I had thought to do it for myself. But, we parents do know the art of sacrifice, Huh, I think I will remind my husband of that right before I ask for a corner area where his roses are presently growing so well.

For years I travelled around so much for work I did not have an actual place to call home. I had belongings in my parents attic, more in a friends closet, and then there was the stuff I schlepped around with me. During that time I made a vow to myself that once I was settled, I would properly organise my jewellery. While going back and forth between North America, South America, Mainland Europe, and the United Kingdom I carried my cherished necklaces, earrings and bracelets in things I can’t bear to admit. And yes, at one stage doubled up plastic bags were involved.

Flash forward, I finally selected a house and laid down some roots. The time to detangle my accessories had arrived. To do the same follow these instructions. You will be making four divided trays, two of which lay underneath on the bottom of a drawer, and the others are connected with wood glue to slide back and forth so you can see below. To make this a seamless sliding motion, attach strips of properly sized molding to the sides of the drawer. I am not going to attempt to provide measurements, as drawer sizes will vary. Alternate the size of the boxes within the trays to fit pins, necklaces, rings etc. Finally, and I think this is the best part, paint the whole thing a fascinating colour like tangerine, or aquamarine. Such colours make everything pop, and as these are your treasures, they should be showcased, not disrespected like mine were for so long.

When buying a new carpet; fitting is the last piece in the jigsaw.

For many of us we may think that once we’ve chosen our preferred design, the hardest part is over, but in reality that’s just the beginning.

Often homeowners will have little knowledge about what actually constitutes a good carpet fitter and indeed what kind of questions they should be asking to get the top level of service available to them. But like anything else, what can really help is knowing a couple of professional tips.

The quality of your installation is absolutely crucial. Even a good, hard wearing carpet will look poor if it hasn’t been fitted correctly.

Here we’ve given you an idea of what you should be looking at when getting your new carpet fitted.

Fit for the job? Proper installation is essential. Where you can, always have your carpet fitted professionally – when you have spent time, money and effort choosing a carpet you really want, don’t ruin it by having it badly fitted. Don’t be fooled by offers of ‘free fitting’. It’s a skilled job and you pay for what you get. Fitters who cut corners and fit carpets badly have the potential to completely ruin your carpet buying experience.

It’s important that you choose a carpet fitter who is a Master Fitter or Approved Fitter from the National Institute of Carpet and Floor Layers (NICF). As the only accredited body for carpet fitters, you can rest assured all members have been fully assessed to ensure they hit the required standard and offer a professional service.

Joining forces: If your room is larger than 4m wide, try and choose a carpet that comes in a 5m width to minimise or eliminate the need for a join.

If you do have to have a join in the carpet, it is important that the carpet fitter and you as the customer take the time to discuss where the seam will be. A common complaint, after installation, is the position of the seam. Joins aren’t invisible but where one is inevitable, ask that seams be placed in less visible areas.

This means that when buying new carpets you assess all your potential requirements. If you haven’t bough enough and need to purchase some down the line it’s unlikely it will come from the same production batch meaning the shade is likely to vary slightly. Planning can be everything.

Measuring mania: To get an approximate idea of the amount of carpet you need, multiply the length of the room by the width to get the square metreage. Make sure you have enough carpet to cover the room by adding an extra 10% to the measurements. This allows for room irregularities and colour match. With this in mind, the best course of action is to have a retailer or installer to make final measurements especially where stairs and odd-shaped rooms are being carpeted.

Ok, so you are aware of the fact that you are supposed to be flipping and rotating your mattresses. You get the message that this is what will produce the most even wear out of it. But, do you really know how often you are supposed to be doing this chore? And have you any idea of when you last did this, or in which direction. I’m guessing the answers are not good ones.

Mattresses are expensive pieces of furniture, and you and your families bodily health is of even greater value. Perhaps, in light of this, you should be more diligent in your upkeep with them then. So here’s how, you go about it. The proper amount of time to lapse in between turns and rotations is four months. Yep, I know this is a quarterly system, and you were probably doing it every year, if that.

Now, it is also time that you start to write down the month you did the act last, and which direction the rotation is meant to proceed the next time. I write mine in the phone book cover, some people put an alert on their computer, or cell phone. Whatever will keep you on track, do it, and then rest easy.

Man’s love affair with noisy, destructive power tools came about when the first electric hand drill made its loud entrance to the world in 1895. Not only are they loved for their power and ability to wreak havoc on anything in their path but, more importantly, the way they make building structures and home improvements that little bit easier.

A tool box full of Bosch power tools is the ultimate man status – it shows self sufficiency, skill and an attitude that will rule the neighbourhood. After all, you wouldn’t steal from the guy who has a power drill in a tool box by the front door.

So for those who are lacking in true and traditional manliness, here’s a list of the loudest and most powerful tools out there to help you on your way to a manlier social status.

Sabre Saw

The sabre saw is, by all means, a practical tool that helps you to cut on a curve or on a vertical axis with ease, but that isn’t why it features in our Top five List. No, we love this tool because it makes you sound pretty hardcore whenever you need to use it. Just imagine saying, “Hang on, I’ll need to use my sabre saw for this job.” It makes you sound like some sort of super-hero-turned-carpenter.

Demolition Hammer

We may like the satisfaction of building a house from scratch, or even just putting those shelves up straight – but there really is nothing better than being allowed to destroy something. Although they’re not the most practical power tool to have lying about in your man-space, they are fun to have a play with if the chance ever arises. They come in a bunch of sizes and can destroy anything from patio slabs to pavements.

Nail Gun

You can’t get much manlier than with a power tool inspired by the machine gun. It wasn’t until the 1950s that someone decided it would be a good idea to take the nail gun out of military hands, and into the commercial workspace. Health and safety has not been the same since and an estimated £200 million per year is spent on medical care for nail gun injuries alone.

Concrete chainsaw

A saw that cuts through concrete – what more could you want in your manly collection of manly tools? These things are absolute beasts and run an average of 4,900 surface feet per minute and have a whopping sound level of 88 dB when ripping through solid concrete.

Acetylene torch

This little beauty gave man the gift of bending and altering metal with fire. The noise that comes out of this blow-torch will be enough to keep the kids out of the garage and the wife proud that you’re dealing with such dangerous devices. Some may say that this is not a true power tool, but a tool with power it is none the less.

One way to bring in a real decorative feature to a space is through the use of colourful curtains. While some choose to put up curtains that blend with the overall design, others make them dominant. It is easy to make curtains fuse with the wall colour, just select fabric in the same tone, but a few shades darker.

However, if you are interested in achieving a wow factor when it comes to the fabric then go bold. This will ensure that they stand out, and make a statement. To tone things down, or to pull it all together, add tiebacks that have a pattern that includes multiple colours found in the room. Or, you can have a seamstress attach piping that copies the colours discovered in a focal rug.

One last thing, if you are going for visual interests, be cognizant of the texture of the fabric of the curtains also. Certain fabrics will invoke certain feelings. For example linen will produce a casual feel, while silk will promote a sophisticated one.

Understandably, because they are called outdoor rooms, we do not instinctually prepare floral arrangements. However, within those so called rooms, we add tables and chairs that we entertain at, and they too would benefit from floral décor. In fact, they probably are the most deserving of all places to get such additions. There is no reason to be reintroduced to the garden slowly, or be reacquainted through small steps, instead greet it warmly, up close and personal.

Next year, when you head out to reclaim your outdoor living space take time to embellish. When you layout the tablecloth, or placemats and the candles and cutlery bring in a floral runner, a bouquet, or individual flowers for each seat. After all, to be out of doors is a celebration, and one of nature. So, embrace the flowers, and apply them to the immediate area that you are using. This sweet touch will not go unnoticed, and we expect that you will receive a nice compliment or two for the effort. And you will all be one step closer to the outdoor world that you have been closed off to for so many months.

As we try to savour the last good days in the garden, we need to find shortcuts for getting the indoor chores out of the way. You may be surprised to learn how many different things you can accomplish with the aid if your dishwasher, thus cutting down the time you spend mulling about inside, and getting you out into the sun and fresh air quicker.

In some cases you might need to call upon a contraption or two to help you in your modified use of the dishwasher, but in others it is all about just putting things right in it. If you are looking to wash your baseball caps, then a do hicky called a ball cap washer will keep it from losing its shape in the dishwasher. Take note, they should not be washed at the same time as food waste, as that could stain the fabric.

Small toys can also go for a spin in the dishwasher, but should be put into a lingerie bag first. Stick to items like action figures, balls, and items that are not so tiny as to slip through the bag. While you are at it, you can put big boy and girl toys in to, meaning tools. However, you must be certain that they are completely dry or they could rust.
